How Long Does it Take to Build a Technology Empire

I came across the above image at this article, talking about how long it takes for technology companies to make it “big.” Go look at that post really quickly for the definition of these different phases (rocket ship, hot company, slow burner). Now, note that it even took Microsoft 8 years to reach the $50 million mark.

So how the heck does this apply to you? Because you, the actor, are an entrepreneur. You are running your own company (so treat it like one) and it takes time to grow that company. It can take years for a company to even begin making money (it took Amazon.com 7 years before it did that), much less to start making lots of money or enjoying any sort of clout.

In my previous post on commitment I said that it takes roughly ten years to reach peak success as an actor. The above graph demonstrates this as well. The mid-range here is in about the 7 – 12 year range. Sure success can come sooner, but it also take longer.

The point here is to take a long-term view of your career, and to cut yourself a little slack for not having won an Oscar…yet.
